UPDATED
To our Dawson Community…
We hope this page helped you in the early days of the closure, but we believe it time to “retire” it. All of the information and resources we had posted here have been integrated into our (re-titled)
All Resources page.
As the Library prepares to support students, teachers and staff through online learning, please know that our staff is available to help you, even from a distance.
Ask a Librarian
|
▽ |
Ask a Librarian serves as a central point of contact for questions about our resources and services, or to report difficulties accessing our collections and website. We monitor these messages between 8:00 – 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Voice messages left on the Reference Desk extension – (514) 931-8731 ext. 1731. – are also forwarded to a shared account.

Book a Librarian
|
▽ |
If you would like to schedule an appointment to “meet” with a Librarian via Zoom, or by phone, please don’t hesitate to select a date and time using our calendar app. If you aren’t available during our regular “opening hours,” we’ll do our best to schedule a time that fits. |
Borrowing & Returning Books
|
▽ |
Book Returns
If you currently have items checked out, you may return them in person to the Security office (2E.14), between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.
If you cannot make it in to the college, you may (at your own cost) send your library books to us by mail at the following address:
Library
c/o Security, suite 2E.14
Dawson College
3040 Sherbrooke St. W.
Montreal, Quebec
Canada H3Z 1A4
Faculty Borrowing
It is possible now for faculty members to borrow physical books from our collection. To do so, please send us your selection(s) before midnight on Wednesday. Your item(s) will be available for pick-up between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. every Thursday afternoon.
Student Borrowing
Unfortunately, it is not currently possible for us to checkout books to students. We are exploring ways to offer limited access to the library’s Reserves collection, and will post updates to Omnivox as they become available.

Library Instruction Request
|
▽ |
Like you, we’re ready to Zoom!
If you’d like to provide your students with a simple library introduction (10 min.), a database search tutorial (20-30 min.), or a customized “information literacy” session (30 min.+), our librarians are ready to work with you to design a meaningful online learning experience.
Please complete our instruction request form to schedule a time, and we’ll follow up with you by phone, email, or Zoom.
|
Book/Film Purchase Request
|
▽ |
If you need a new book or film for your course, please tell us what you need by completing a purchase request form. We’ll do our best to acquire it in an accessible, digital format. (Unless, of course, it’s a hard copy you need and want!)
|
Suggest a Website
|
▽ |
We would like our library website to serve as a central point of access for any resources that students need to succeed in your classes. To this end, we envision creating a Course Materials page on our site, delivering links to course websites and to other high-quality resources you recommend to your students.
If there is a website you would like us include, please consider sharing it through our Suggest a Website form. |
ORIGINAL
The Dawson College Library is here to support students and teachers through this transition to online learning and teaching. If you cannot access the resource(s) you need from the collections below, please
Ask a Librarian to investigate other free or commercial access options.
**Please note that there will be no fines applied for materials that were checked out at the time of the college-wide closure, beginning March 14th. We ask that you please hold on to your library books, and wait for further advice as to when and how to return books to the library.
Other Electronic Resources
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, a multitude of new e-resources have been made freely available by participating publishers and educational content platforms. Please note that you may be required to create a free account to access some of these materials, and that they are only available temporarily. We’ve included information regarding the duration of free access for each of the collections below.
*Free Online Textbooks (e-Reserves)*
Electronic versions of several textbooks from our library’s
Reserves Collection can be accessed, temporarily, through one of the platforms below.
VitalSource
|
NEW Info & Instructions ▽ |
VitalSource Bookshelf (an online eBook platform) is partnering with several publishers to allow students and faculty affected by school closures the chance to temporarily access eTextbooks for free until April 30th 2020. Several textbooks from our library’s Reserves Collection can be accessed through this platform.
To find and access textbooks:
- Create a VitalSource account using your Dawson College email and follow the email verification steps.
- Log in to VitalSource Bookshelf through their website or download the app.
- Once you are logged in, click on Explore on the top left side and enter your textbook title in the search bar to see if it is available.
- If your textbook comes up in the results list, hover on the icon and click Borrow.
The eTextbook will automatically be lent out to you until April 30th 2020. Students and faculty can borrow up to 7 eTextbooks this way. You can access your borrowed titles by clicking the Library tab at the top left of the screen.
Available through April 30, 2020.
**After April 30th**
Publishers have offered assurances that their e-textbooks will still be available, but will need to accessed from their own company platforms, rather than the VitalSource Bookshelf.
Access to e-textbooks will only be granted at the request of a faculty member, so students should contact their teachers.
The library can provide teachers with an up-to-date list of contacts from each publisher upon request.
